A Belgian public safety organisation is establishing a national centre of expertise for C-UAS, XR and robotics, where an XR team develops simulators for police, defence, customs and other security services. As a 3D Modeller, you will create 3D assets for XR training simulators in Blender and integrate them into Unity, covering environments, vehicles, characters, weapons and props for scenarios across Belgium, including Brussels and the wider Brussels Region.
The mission
The XR core team works within the innovation function alongside programmers, 3D artists, project leads and operational users from police, defence, customs and specialist units. Its simulators reproduce public safety situations, making accurate geometry, PBR materials and stable real-time performance important to training quality. The programme is developed with public authorities, the Brussels Region and academic partners.
You will contribute to the full asset workflow, from reference and blockout through modelling, sculpting, UV unwrapping, texturing, asset optimization, export and Unity integration. You will prototype environments and assets with end users, verify scale, pivots, naming and performance, and document the pipeline for colleagues and partners. This is a junior 3D Modeller role for someone working in Blender who can show relevant work in a portfolio.
Your responsibilities
- Create detailed Blender models of characters, vehicles, weapons, props and buildings that match operational references.
- Build realistic environment art for locations and scenarios used in police, defence and customs training.
- Develop PBR texturing and materials that provide consistent visual fidelity across XR assets.
- Optimize topology, poly counts, UV layouts, texture sizes and LODs for real-time rendering.
- Export and integrate Blender assets into Unity, validating scale, pivot points, materials and naming conventions.
- Iterate with end users and cross-functional colleagues while documenting asset pipelines and reusable processes.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Use Blender for modelling, sculpting, UV unwrapping, texturing and material creation.
- Show a portfolio of 3D assets or environments created for games, XR simulators or training applications.
- Apply PBR texturing workflows using Substance Painter or Substance Designer.
- Optimize models for real-time rendering on XR platforms, including VR, AR and MR, while balancing realism with performance.
- Judge detail, proportion and realism, and translate operational feedback into authentic assets.
- Communicate clearly with end users, artists, programmers and project leads in cross-functional teams.
