A Belgian public security organisation develops and operates the national component of the Schengen Information System, which enables competent authorities to exchange alerts on people and objects. The role combines full-cycle PHP web application development with Angular JS, SQL, REST Web Services, and DevOps practices in a secure, high-availability environment.
The mission
The Schengen Information System has been in operation since 1995 and supports security and border-management activities across Europe. Its national component contains alerts, associated actions, and updated data introduced through SIS Recast, including additional alert types and richer information. The application serves multiple users and must provide reliable, secure access for competent authorities in Belgium.
In this medior PHP developer role, you will cover full-cycle PHP web application development, from functional and technical analysis through implementation, testing, maintenance, and support. You will connect PHP back-end services with front-end features, analyse user needs, document technical decisions, and advise on adaptations to the application. You will work in a multidisciplinary team of internal and external contributors and provide technical guidance or coaching to colleagues when required.
Your responsibilities
- Design and evolve secure, multi-user web applications that meet functional requirements and availability expectations.
- Develop and integrate PHP REST Web Services and front-end components using PHP 5.6 and 7, Angular JS, JavaScript, Ajax, jQuery, Smarty, and SQL.
- Translate functional and technical analyses into maintainable application features for the national SIS environment.
- Validate and maintain application quality through structured testing, troubleshooting, corrective maintenance, and technical support.
- Strengthen delivery and change control through Git and DevOps practices, while following application security and cybersecurity requirements.
- Document, advise, and coach by recording technical solutions, providing domain-specific recommendations, and supporting colleagues.
Your profile
Essential skills
- You bring medior-level experience in PHP web application development, including PHP 5.6 and 7.
- You can develop across the back end and front end, with practical knowledge of Angular JS, JavaScript, Ajax, and jQuery.
- You can work with PHP frameworks such as CodeIgniter, templating with Smarty, and relational data using SQL.
- You understand REST Web Services implemented in PHP and can integrate them into multi-user applications.
- You use Git and DevOps practices to support controlled development and delivery.
- You can analyse user requirements, produce technical documentation, test solutions, and provide application support.
- You work discreetly and flexibly in a security-sensitive environment, with a customer-oriented approach and the ability to remain effective under pressure.
