A Belgian federal public-sector organisation is strengthening its Integration Team, which supports pension administration across Belgium through an enterprise integration landscape using ESB technologies such as AXWAY and Fuse. The API Analyst is an enabling role, guiding development teams in API analysis and design, REST API contracts and secure reusable integration services rather than implementing APIs as a developer.

The mission

The team connects application, integration and technology architecture across a landscape that includes REST APIs, OpenAPI/Swagger, JSON, middleware, message queues, synchronous and asynchronous communication, and event-driven integration. The work establishes consistent contracts and standards for naming, versioning, error handling, security, documentation and API lifecycle management, so services remain modular and reusable within a composable architecture.

You will analyse functional and technical requirements and translate them into API specifications, contracts and integration agreements that development teams can apply. You will review existing APIs and integration patterns, align decisions with enterprise and solution architects, and help teams publish and use interfaces consistently. Your work links business analysts, functional analysts, development, security and operations stakeholders within an Agile/Scrum delivery model.

Your responsibilities

  • Guide development teams through API analysis, design and documentation, producing contracts aligned with architecture and integration standards.
  • Define and maintain API specifications in OpenAPI/Swagger, with practical templates and documentation that improve reuse.
  • Enforce API governance covering naming conventions, versioning, error handling, security rules, publication and lifecycle management.
  • Assess existing APIs, ESB flows and middleware patterns across AXWAY and Fuse, recommending standardisation and reuse.
  • Advise teams on secure API design, including OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT, certificates and access control.
  • Coordinate reviews with analysts, architects, security and operations, and support knowledge sharing across development teams.

Your profile

Essential skills

  • Bring mid-level experience in functional and technical analysis within IT projects or software development.
  • Translate business and technical needs into REST API designs, API contracts and clear integration specifications using JSON and OpenAPI/Swagger.
  • Apply API governance principles to documentation, standardisation, version control, reuse and lifecycle management.
  • Understand integration principles across ESB environments and integration platforms, including synchronous and asynchronous communication, messaging and event-driven integration.
  • Use API security concepts such as OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT, certificates, access control and secure API design.
  • Work effectively with development teams in Agile/Scrum, and communicate clearly with functional stakeholders, architects, security and operations.
  • Apply composable architecture principles pragmatically, treating APIs and services as modular, loosely coupled building blocks.
  • Include with your application a concise presentation or document describing an API or integration environment where you supported less experienced development teams, your personal role, stakeholder collaboration and architectural alignment.
