A Flemish public sector digital services organisation is building and operating a central AWS hub-spoke platform for government workloads across the Flemish region. As an AWS DevOps Engineer (Medior), you will apply Infrastructure as Code for AWS workloads, automate CI/CD with GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps Pipelines, and support applications running in their landing zones.
The mission
The central AWS hub provides shared network architecture, firewall controls, DNS, logging, monitoring and a deployment API for workloads organised in a hub-spoke architecture. Parts of the platform are already defined through Infrastructure as Code, with further work required to scale the infrastructure, add services and manage flows consistently across landing zones. It supports public-facing government portals and foundational registries used across Flanders, making reliable shared operations important to multiple project teams.
You will work in the AWS System Team alongside an Azure System Team within a central Platform Engineering function. Your scope covers platform build-out, administration and daily operation, including shared infrastructure, application deployments and new service configurations. You will connect spokes to the hub, help project teams use the platform, and turn operational requirements into automated changes with clear recovery procedures.
Your responsibilities
- Extend and operate the central AWS platform, including networking, firewall controls, DNS, logging, monitoring and deployment services.
- Strengthen the existing IaC implementation so infrastructure can be provisioned, scaled and maintained consistently across environments.
- Automate application releases and platform changes through CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps Pipelines or comparable tooling.
- Onboard and operationalise applications in AWS landing zones, connecting spokes to the central hub and configuring required services and flows.
- Monitor infrastructure and application health, then define and maintain system failure, recovery and continuity procedures.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Bring at least three years of hands-on AWS experience in a DevOps or platform operations context.
- Automate CI/CD processes with GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps Pipelines or comparable tooling, with at least three years of experience.
- Use Python for operational tooling and automation, with at least three years of experience.
- Apply practical Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methods to provision and maintain cloud infrastructure, with at least three years of experience.
- Demonstrate through one or more cases at least three years of experience setting up and maintaining a central hosting platform in a hub-spoke architecture, including shared networking, DNS, logging and monitoring components.
- Work methodically with application and project teams, documenting platform changes and recovery procedures.
Preferred skills
- Use the AWS CLI and Azure DevOps in daily platform administration or delivery work.
- Manage container orchestration with ECS Fargate, Kubernetes or Docker, with at least one year of practical experience.
- Apply AWS governance and security services such as Control Tower, SCP, Security Hub, GuardDuty, IAM, Identity Center or Inspector.
- Bring experience within the Flemish government and familiarity with an Agile DevOps culture.
- Understand implementations based on the VO Information Classification Framework (ICR).
- Have administration knowledge of PostgreSQL, MSSQL or MongoDB.
Languages
