A Belgian public-sector organisation is modernising the data foundations used by its operational services through a mainframe migration programme. This medior web and API developer role focuses on PHP and JavaScript components, REST APIs, and secure web services that support search, logging, analytics, AI and intelligence-led applications.
The mission
The programme is moving operational and business-register data from mainframe systems into an open architecture. The target landscape must expose reliable data to search, logging, analytics, AI and intelligence-led applications while improving interoperability between systems. Delivery follows Scrum, DevOps, and CI/CD practices in a multidisciplinary team of internal and external colleagues in Brussels.
Your day-to-day scope covers technical analysis, software architecture, API design, and development of data-exchange services. You will build PHP and JavaScript components, connect applications through REST APIs, and contribute to secure authentication, automated testing, containerization, and database integration. Your work links the migration programme to operational applications and future data-driven capabilities.
Your responsibilities
- Design and evolve REST APIs and web services that let operational applications exchange data reliably.
- Develop PHP and JavaScript components that support migrated data access, analytics, and operational workflows.
- Shape software architecture using sound design principles and patterns to keep services interoperable, maintainable, and fit for extension.
- Implement authentication and authorisation with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and JWT-based tokens while applying Security By Design.
- Integrate automated tests, GitLab pipelines, containerization, and DevOps practices into repeatable delivery workflows.
- Collaborate with internal and external specialists to resolve technical issues and maintain quality across APIs, data stores, and application boundaries.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Bring medior-level experience in web and API development with PHP and JavaScript.
- Build and evolve REST APIs and web services for application integration and data exchange.
- Apply software architecture practices, including design principles, patterns, and clear technical documentation.
- Implement authentication with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and JWT-based tokens.
- Work with SQL, NoSQL, and PostgreSQL data stores and understand migration and interoperability concerns.
- Build secure software through application security and Security By Design, supported by automated tests.
- Use GitLab, containerization, DevOps, and MLOps practices where they support reliable delivery and data-driven applications.
- Work autonomously, solve problems carefully, maintain attention to detail, and take responsibility for quality.
Languages
- French or Dutch: native-level proficiency in one of the two.
