A business transformation programme based in Brussels, within a major organisation in Belgium, is updating its business application landscape through hand-over, refactoring and greenfield delivery. As a Functional Analyst, you will translate business needs and customer journey findings into validated functional designs, UML and BPMN models, and user stories for teams working with Agile/Scrum. This role combines business process analysis with enough technical understanding to discuss APIs, mappings, services and data flows with developers.
The mission
You will join a department of approximately 90 people responsible for handing over existing applications, refactoring established solutions and developing new business applications. The ecosystem includes J2EE, Java 8, Oracle, Hibernate, JUnit, Selenium, Maven, Git and Jira, so the role requires technical fluency without hands-on development. The work covers projects from initial needs analysis through delivery and documentation. It supports consistent business processes and usable applications across a broad application landscape.
Your day-to-day scope covers the full project lifecycle from clarifying needs with stakeholders to validating delivered functionality. You will analyse existing processes and new functional and non-functional requirements, then turn them into application designs and technical specifications. You will work with business analysts, developers, project managers, coordinators and partners to refine decisions and manage dependencies. You will follow delivery end-to-end while producing analysis documentation, software requirements specifications, data models, user stories and test plans and cases.
Your responsibilities
- Analyse and model business processes using BPMN, UML and customer journey techniques to make current and future workflows explicit.
- Produce functional analysis, application designs and software requirements specifications with the diagrams, data models and acceptance detail needed for delivery.
- Translate validated requirements into clear user stories and technical clarifications covering APIs, mappings, business models, batches and services.
- Coordinate test analysis and design, including test plans and cases, so new functionality can be verified against business expectations.
- Maintain project documentation in Confluence, report status and support risk management, decisions and escalations with project managers.
- Build durable relationships with stakeholders, integrate into existing teams and provide guidance to junior analysts when needed.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Apply functional analysis as a medior functional analyst across complex business contexts, while managing changing priorities.
- Use UML and BPMN to express processes, application behaviour and data relationships.
- Write structured user stories and functional documentation, including software requirements specifications.
- Use SQL to investigate data and validate functional assumptions.
- Conduct test analysis and design, including test plans and cases, to verify functionality against requirements.
- Work in Agile/Scrum delivery teams and collaborate with business stakeholders, developers, project managers and external partners.
- Maintain traceable documentation in Confluence and communicate clearly in written technical English.
- Understand APIs, mappings, batches, services and application integrations without taking on development tasks.
- Meet the Belgian nationality requirement associated with the activities.
Languages
- French or Dutch: active professional proficiency at B2 level, including speaking, understanding, reading and writing technical documentation.
- English: B2 written proficiency for project and technical documentation.
