A national public-sector security organisation is establishing an expertise centre for counter-drone systems, extended reality (XR) and robotics to support police, defence, customs and related services. As a Game Development Programmer in the XR core team, you will build Unity-based XR simulators for operational training with C#, implementing realistic game mechanics and interactive scenarios for field preparation.
The mission
The XR team develops training and simulation applications for police, special forces and other security partners. Its technical landscape centres on Unity, C# and VR, AR and MR technologies, allowing operational situations to be reproduced in controlled, repeatable environments. You will work with programmers, 3D artists, project leads and operational users, alongside defence, customs and academic partners. The resulting simulators support consistent preparation before personnel operate in real-world conditions.
Your scope covers the gameplay and simulation layer, from rapid prototyping to maintainable production features. You will translate operational input into interactive XR training scenarios in Unity, then test and refine behaviour, usability and performance across XR platforms. You will document code, systems and processes so colleagues and partner organisations can maintain and extend the simulators. This junior game development programmer role suits someone who can show practical work through a portfolio and communicate across technical and operational teams.
Your responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Unity XR simulator systems and mechanics in C#, aligned with training requirements for police and special forces.
- Implement interactive XR elements and game mechanics that reflect operational scenarios accurately.
- Drive rapid prototyping and iteration of XR training features with operational users, 3D artists, designers and programmers.
- Optimize simulator performance by debugging C# code and validating smooth operation across VR, AR and MR platforms.
- Convert user feedback into reliable simulation behaviour and support reviews with security-service partners.
- Maintain technical documentation covering XR code, systems and development processes.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Write clean, maintainable and efficient code through sound C# programming, debugging and performance optimization practices.
- Apply hands-on Unity development skills to VR, AR and MR applications.
- Implement game mechanics, interactive elements and training scenarios that behave consistently in an XR simulator.
- Use game design principles and knowledge of XR technologies, physics, mathematics and algorithms in practical development.
- Demonstrate games and/or XR simulators for training or simulation through a portfolio, including C# programming for XR simulator development.
- Solve technical problems collaboratively and maintain clear, up-to-date documentation for code and systems.
Preferred skills
- Bring previous experience working with police, defence, customs or other security services.
- Use 3D scanning and digital reconstruction techniques such as LiDAR or photogrammetry, including asset optimization.
- Understand operational training environments and their practical constraints.
Languages
- Proficiency in Dutch, French and/or English is required for collaboration with operational and technical partners. The source requirements do not specify a CEFR threshold.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, game development or a related field, or multiple years of proven industry experience supported by a comprehensive portfolio.
