Take ownership of civic-grade web applications across the stack as a Java Full Stack Developer (Senior) — bring your Java and full‑stack web development expertise to translate complex business needs into robust technical designs in Belgium. Join a multidisciplinary team that builds, maintains and upgrades applications supporting domains like enforcement, regulation and geospatial services.
Role Overview
This is a long-term opportunity to join a close-knit development team within a public-sector department in Brussels. You will lead functional and technical design, implement end-to-end features and ensure the reliability of production systems—shaping domain-specific solutions and accelerating your architecture and leadership experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement backend and frontend components for Java-based web applications, producing reliable REST APIs and responsive user interfaces.
- Translate business requirements into clear functional and technical designs, proposing pragmatic architectures and implementation plans.
- Maintain and evolve existing applications: deliver upgrades, fix production issues and reduce technical debt to improve stability and performance.
- Collaborate with product owners, domain experts, QA and other developers in a multidisciplinary team to deliver incremental value.
- Own features from conception through deployment and documentation; share knowledge and mentor less-experienced colleagues.
Required Skills
- Proven senior-level experience in Java server-side development and building scalable web applications.
- Practical full-stack experience delivering web applications, including designing RESTful APIs and integrating front-end frameworks (examples: React, Angular, Vue).
- Strong ability to produce functional and technical specifications and translate business needs into maintainable technical solutions.
- Experience maintaining production systems, troubleshooting complex issues and managing upgrades.
- Familiarity with relational databases, version control (Git) and basic CI/CD practices.
What We Offer
- Permanent, long-term engagement with a public-sector organisation in Belgium; a role that prioritises impact and domain expertise over short-term assignments.
- Hybrid on-site setup focused on collaboration: expected at the Brussels office at least two days per week, with remaining days available for telework.
- A multidisciplinary, stable team where you will own features end-to-end and build specialist knowledge in areas such as enforcement, regulation and geospatial services.
- Clear opportunity for professional growth through hands-on design responsibility, mentoring and sustained domain exposure.
