A federal public-sector organisation is reducing its dependence on a mainframe by moving large operational and business-register datasets to an open architecture. This senior PHP/C Developer role contributes to this migration programme through PHP 5.6, PHP 7 and PHP 8 applications and server-level C programming, including asynchronous threads. The work connects those data services with search, analytics and artificial intelligence solutions.
The mission
Within the Systems Division, the team develops and operates central ICT systems, infrastructure and security controls for high-availability services. The migration makes data easier to consume for search, analysis and intelligence-led work, while reducing workloads tied to the mainframe. The current delivery phase runs through the end of 2026, with work performed by a multidisciplinary team of internal and external specialists.
You will design, develop, test, maintain and improve PHP and C solutions based on functional and technical analyses. Your scope includes PHP web applications, C components, web-service integrations using REST and SOAP, and interactions with Linux Red Hat server environments over TCP/IP. You will work with functional analysts and engineers to turn user needs into reliable changes, document technical decisions and support the applications throughout their lifecycle.
Your responsibilities
- Design and deliver PHP and C applications that support the migration of data to the open architecture.
- Build and maintain web-service integrations using REST and SOAP from PHP applications.
- Improve the quality, performance and availability of existing solutions in a high-availability environment.
- Analyse user needs with functional analysts and convert them into tested technical solutions.
- Investigate application issues, provide technical support and implement sustainable fixes.
- Advise on technology choices, propose improvements and maintain clear technical documentation.
