A semi-public organisation in the Belgian nuclear sector is developing a programme to recover valuable radioisotopes from radioactive waste streams for use in nuclear medicine, research and industry. This Project Engineer role combines nuclear techniques, conventional and nuclear safety, project management, and technical coordination across process, installation and regulatory activities.

The mission

The project focuses on recovering scarce radioisotopes while maintaining the safety and compliance standards required for radioactive waste processing. The technical scope includes chemical separation processes, adaptations to existing installations, ventilation and confinement systems, and the preparation of safety and operating documentation. The work supports more sustainable use of radioactive materials and the continued availability of radioisotopes for medical, research and industrial applications.

As Project Engineer, you will act as a technical knowledge holder for the operational cell and support the manager and shift leaders in making informed decisions. You will identify improvement opportunities, develop practical scenarios, coordinate implementation activities, and follow up on project progress. Your work will connect operators, technical services, external parties and competent authorities, ensuring that changes are technically sound, documented and safely implemented.

Your responsibilities

  • Provide multidisciplinary technical advice to internal and external stakeholders and support efficient operation of the cell.
  • Identify improvement needs, assess possible solutions and translate operational input into implementable scenarios.
  • Coordinate modifications and works on installations and buildings, including ventilation and confinement systems, while verifying the quality of delivery.
  • Lead or contribute to projects that optimise processes, equipment and working methods, from definition through implementation and follow-up.
  • Prepare and maintain safety reports, technical specifications, permit applications, management-of-change documents, instructions and operating dossiers.
  • Monitor KPIs, planning and progress, report to management and competent authorities, and analyse problems to prevent recurrence.

Your profile

Essential skills

  • Apply knowledge of conventional and nuclear safety in day-to-day technical decisions and project execution.
  • Understand nuclear techniques and the safety regulations, procedures, instructions and permits that govern work in a nuclear environment.
  • Use project management capabilities to structure improvements, coordinate stakeholders and follow through on agreed actions.
  • Bring solid technical and mechanical understanding to connect process requirements with installation work and operational constraints.
  • Demonstrate a strong affinity with chemical processes, including separation processes, and assess their implications for safe operation.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and preserve operational knowledge that is not yet formally documented.
  • Communicate clearly with managers, shift leaders, operators, support services, contractors and external stakeholders.

Education

  • A technical degree or equivalent professional experience in engineering, nuclear technology, process technology or a related discipline.
