A public-sector organisation serving the Flemish region of Belgium is continuing the implementation and operation of its Azure data platform for water quality, air quality and climate adaptation programmes. As a senior data engineer and data architect, you will use Azure Databricks to improve platform operations, establish data architecture and deliver new data projects through the digital solutions service.
The mission
The organisation has approximately 750 employees and operates across Flanders. Its data platform combines Azure Databricks with a Power BI environment to support analytics and data work linked to environmental policy and public services. The assignment covers platform maintenance, performance and cost efficiency, as well as the definition of reusable engineering practices. Delivery takes place in an Agile setting, with a code of good practice being developed for future projects.
You will work across daily platform operations and new project delivery. Your scope includes following scheduled runs, investigating technical or performance issues, and turning findings into improvements to reliability, maintainability and cost control. For new initiatives, you will shape data strategy and data architecture, define data models and implement or guide engineering work on Azure. The role connects operational insight with decisions that can be reused across the wider data platform.
Your responsibilities
- Strengthen the reliability of the Azure data platform and Power BI environment by monitoring daily runs and addressing recurring operational issues.
- Define and document a code of good practice for Databricks development, deployment and platform use.
- Design data architecture and data models that support new projects and remain reusable across the platform.
- Deliver or guide data engineering work on Azure, from architectural decisions through implementation and validation.
- Assess platform performance and cost efficiency, then recommend improvements based on measurable findings.
- Align project delivery with data strategy, data standards and maintainable engineering practices in an Agile environment.
Your profile
Essential skills

- Set up and develop data strategy and data architecture, translating architectural decisions into workable delivery approaches.
- Hold a Databricks Solutions Architect certification.
- Communicate clearly with technical and project stakeholders and work effectively in an Agile delivery context.
Preferred skills
- Translate conceptual information models into logical data models.
- Work with Azure Synapse and Azure Data Factory.
- Apply Data Management principles and use established data standards.
- Use programming and scripting languages to support data engineering and automation.
