A Belgian federal public service supports citizens through pension calculation, payment, and related benefit processes. In this test automation specialist role, you will validate a monolithic application and standalone modules, combining Java test automation for payment and accounting functions with Cucumber scenarios and manual and automated integration and E2E testing.
The mission
The ICT department has around 250 people and provides tools for a Belgian public administration through its development and platform and enabling functions. The payment domain includes front-end and back-end components, with changes that must be verified across application layers, data flows, and external interfaces. Reliable testing is important because calculation, accounting, and payment results must be accurate and traceable for citizens and professional users.
You will join a cross-functional team responsible for pension payment processes and work as its medior testing specialist. You will define test plans and acceptance criteria with business stakeholders and developers, then manage the integration and end-to-end test lifecycle through defect validation. The role also includes Scrum Master responsibilities for the team's Agile Scrum ceremonies and Domain Quality Steward activities across four teams. Full-time availability is required from 1 November 2026.
Your responsibilities
- Define risk-based test plans and acceptance criteria for each increment, aligning business and development teams on expected outcomes.
- Create, document, and execute manual, integration, and E2E test cases for the monolith and standalone modules.
- Implement and supervise automated tests in Java and Cucumber, applying documented best practices and maintaining reliable regression coverage.
- Analyse and prioritise defects using advanced SQL, logs, REST/SOAP exchanges, XML, and application evidence, then follow them through validation in JIRA.
- Coordinate user acceptance testing and provide clear, critical feedback to developers, business users, and other delivery teams.
- Strengthen quality practices across four teams while facilitating Scrum ceremonies, follow-up, and inspect-and-adapt reviews.
Your profile
Essential skills
- Bring medior-level experience managing the full E2E testing lifecycle independently, from test analysis and coverage decisions to defect detection, investigation, and validation.
- Translate functional requirements into acceptance criteria, test plans, manual cases, integration tests, and end-to-end scenarios.
- Write Java tests in an object-oriented codebase and create Cucumber tests using domain-driven design (DDD).
- Apply test automation methodologies, test pyramid principles, and maintainable coding practices; explain in your CV which automated testing best practices you use and why.
- Query relational data with advanced SQL for joins and deltas, as well as other medium-complexity queries.
- Work effectively in an Agile Scrum setting, with experience as Scrum Master and responsibility for team organisation and inspect-and-adapt follow-up.
- Use Git, JIRA, Miro, OpenGrok, Postman or Bruno, and Cucumber; experience with Playwright is relevant to the testing toolset.
- Test REST and SOAP interfaces and XML-based data exchanges.
- Bring recent experience testing a large payment or accounting system and communicate clearly with business stakeholders, development teams, and other testers.
- Work autonomously while remaining assertive, collaborative, curious, open to feedback, and able to set priorities and take initiative.
